Overgrown Tree Line Gets a Garden Makeover in Bethlehem

Some spots on a property just get ignored for years. The area along a tree line is usually one of them - too shady for grass, too awkward to mow around, and eventually just a tangled mess you stop looking at. That's exactly what we were working with here in Bethlehem.

What this homeowner wanted was simple. A space they could actually enjoy from inside the house. Something that felt intentional, not wild. So we designed a garden that works with the existing mature trees rather than fighting them - using plants that thrive in dappled shade and partial sun.

We went with a mix that gives you color and texture across different heights. Hydrangeas anchor the design with big, showy blooms. Black-eyed Susans and coneflowers bring in warm pops of yellow and pink at the mid-level. A Japanese maple adds deep burgundy foliage that plays off all that green. Young ornamental trees were staked in to give the bed some vertical structure as everything fills in over time. Fresh dark mulch ties it all together and keeps the weeds from taking back over.

The result is a garden that earns its spot. You can see it from the kitchen window. It gives you something to look at in the morning. That's the whole point of good planting and garden design - it should make you actually want to be home.
